Ocean Currents

All beaches in Costa Rica have the possibility of strong currents, and there is often relatively high surf due to tidal movements or weather conditions. It is important to obey local advisories – a red flag at the beach indicates danger. Ask your tour guide, local residents, or if present a lifeguard, about general and current conditions as to whether the sea is suitable for swimming.

Rip currents (more commonly known as undertows) are present in some Costa Rica`s beach so we recommend that before you enter to take a swim, take into account the instructions or records that have the beach, and have a basic understanding of these currents rescues. With a little information on how it works as well as excluding some factors such as weather, alcohol and misinformation, you can have a safe vacation.
